About this part
Also known as
VANOS Solenoid
Variable Valve Timing Solenoid
VVT Solenoid
Camshaft Actuator Solenoid
Oil Control Valve
VANOS Valve
What this part does
The VANOS solenoid regulates the flow of engine oil to the variable valve timing actuators on the camshafts. By precisely controlling this oil pressure, it allows the engine management system to advance or retard camshaft timing based on engine load and RPM. These solenoids are mounted directly to the front of the cylinder heads. When a solenoid fails or becomes clogged with sludge, the system cannot adjust the timing correctly. This typically results in a rough idle, noticeable hesitation during acceleration, reduced fuel efficiency, and a check engine light associated with camshaft position or timing faults.

Before you order
Confirm the part number against your original unit before purchasing. The 4.4L V8 engine utilizes four of these solenoids in total (two per cylinder bank, for intake and exhaust). While they can be replaced individually, it is common practice to replace them in pairs per bank if diagnosing a persistent timing fault. A used solenoid does not require module coding, but you must clear the engine adaptations using a diagnostic tool after installation. Always replace the rubber O-rings with new ones before bolting the valve into the cylinder head to prevent oil leaks.
