What this part does

The Active Grille Shutter is a motorized louvre system mounted behind the front bumper cover and directly in front of the radiator and cooling pack. It operates automatically via the engine control module to regulate the volume of air passing through the engine bay. At cruising speeds, the flaps close to reduce aerodynamic drag and improve efficiency. When engine coolant temperatures rise or the air conditioning demands more heat exchange, the actuator opens the louvres to maximize ambient airflow. A failed shutter motor or jammed flap mechanism usually triggers a check engine light and can cause the vehicle to run hotter than normal or lose aerodynamic efficiency. Because it sits at the very leading edge of the vehicle, the assembly is highly susceptible to binding caused by road debris, ice buildup, and minor front-end impacts.
