What this part does
The left hood hinge secures the driver side of the hood panel to the vehicle's upper frame rail. It acts as the primary pivot mechanism, ensuring the heavy aluminum hood opens smoothly and rests securely when closed. On the G11 and G12 generation of the BMW 7 Series, the hinge assembly is engineered to maintain incredibly tight factory panel gaps between the hood, the front fenders, and the cowl.
In many of these models, the hinge integrates with the vehicle's active pedestrian protection system, utilizing an actuator that rapidly elevates the rear of the hood during a frontal impact. When a hinge fails due to binding pivots, corrosion, or collision damage, the hood will sit out of alignment, creating uneven panel gaps. A bent hinge can also prevent the dual hood latches from engaging properly, triggering a hood-open warning on the dashboard and creating a significant safety risk at highway speeds.

Before you order
This is the Left (driver side) hinge assembly. It is critical to confirm whether your vehicle is equipped with the active pedestrian protection system, as standard hinges and pyrotechnic active hinges are not interchangeable and will cause an SRS fault code if mismatched.
If you are replacing this part due to a front-end collision, closely inspect the right-side hinge as well. Collision forces easily transfer through the rigid hood structure, often causing hairline bends in the opposite hinge that make proper panel alignment impossible. Always loosely install the hinge and check your fender-to-hood gaps before performing the final torque sequence.
