What this part does

The automatic transmission multiplies engine torque and manages gear shifts to transfer power efficiently from the engine to the driveline. In BMW xDrive models, this unit mounts directly to the back of the engine and mates with the transfer case to distribute power to all four wheels. It contains the mechanical gearsets, clutch packs, and the internal mechatronic unit that controls hydraulic fluid flow for precise shifting. When this assembly fails or internal clutches wear out, the vehicle may experience gear slipping, harsh or delayed shifting, a drivetrain malfunction warning on the iDrive screen, or a complete loss of forward and reverse drive.

Before you order

This transmission assembly contains an internal mechatronic control unit (valve body and TCM combined) that is immobilizer-locked to the vehicle it came from. It must be installed, programmed, and coded by a specialized BMW technician using ISTA or advanced aftermarket diagnostic equipment, otherwise the vehicle will not start or engage gears. Always verify your original part number matches exactly, as BMW utilizes different gearsets, bell housings, and mechatronic calibrations depending on the specific engine and all-wheel-drive configuration. We strongly advise replacing the transmission fluid, the plastic oil pan which houses the integrated filter, and the mechatronic sealing sleeves while the unit is out of the vehicle.
