The rear seat assembly provides passenger seating for the second row of the vehicle cabin and forms the barrier between the passenger area and the rear cargo space. In the BMW E39 Touring models, this assembly features a split-folding backrest designed to fold flat, significantly expanding the rear cargo capacity. It comprises the lower seat cushion and the upper backrest sections, which integrate the mounting points for the rear seatbelts, child seat anchors, and often the housing for the retractable cargo cover and dog net. Replacement is usually required when the leather or fabric tears, the foam degrades, the folding latch mechanisms break, or the frame is damaged.

Verify your exact interior upholstery color and material (such as Montana leather or Sand Beige) before purchasing, as BMW offered multiple textures and shades that can look similar in photographs but clash in person. E39 Wagon (Touring) rear seats are structurally unique and will absolutely not fit or mount into E39 Sedan models. Depending on the build date of your vehicle, you may need to transfer over your original seatbelt receptacles to avoid triggering an airbag warning light, as the pyrotechnic tensioners must communicate correctly with your existing SRS module.
