What this part does
The KAFAS 2 camera mounts directly to the interior of the windshield, positioned just behind the rear-view mirror. It acts as the primary optical sensor for the vehicle's advanced driver assistance systems. The camera continuously scans the road ahead, reading lane markings, detecting oncoming vehicle headlights, identifying speed limit signs, and monitoring the distance to vehicles in front.
Data collected by this module is routed to the main vehicle computers to operate features like lane departure warning, active blind spot detection, high-beam assistant, and collision mitigation systems. When the camera or its internal module fails, the iDrive system will immediately display driver assistance malfunction warnings. You will subsequently lose functionality for lane keeping, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control braking features.

Before you order
This is a complex electronic control unit that is not plug-and-play. Installing a used KAFAS 2 module requires specialized BMW diagnostic software (such as ISTA) to flash the module, inject the correct FSC codes, and match the unit to your vehicle's VIN and equipment order (FA). Without proper coding, the camera will not initialize and the driver assistance errors will remain on your dashboard.
Calibration is mandatory after installation. Before initiating the calibration drive, verify that the windshield glass in front of the camera lens is perfectly clean both inside and out. Any rock chips, deep scratches, or aftermarket windshield distortion in the camera's field of view will cause the calibration process to fail.
